The United States, the 2026 G20 Presidency, hosted its first G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting of the year in Washington, D.C. on April 16.

The meeting focused on global macroeconomic situation, global growth, and global imbalances. Chinese Minister of Finance Lan Fo’an, accompanied by Vice Minister Liao Min, attended and spoke at the meeting.

Lan noted that the current international landscape is intertwined with uncertainties and disruptions, and the global economy is continuously impacted by geopolitical tensions and protectionism. China firmly upholds multilateralism and free trade, and opposes protectionism and unilateralism. The G20 should place development at the center of its global agenda and strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination and experience-sharing, so as to forge stronger collective efforts to promote global economic growth, Lan noted. All parties should adopt a comprehensive, objective and balanced view of global imbalances, and promote sustained global growth through openness, cooperation and macroeconomic policy coordination, he added.

Lan highlighted the steady and improving performance of the Chinese economy, emphasizing that during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) period, China will place greater emphasis on expanding domestic demand, investing in people, and pursuing openness and shared development to achieve effective qualitative improvement and reasonable quantitative growth, and continue to provide opportunities and important support for global economic growth.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Lan held bilateral discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Thailand Ekniti Nitithanprapas; Commissioner for Economy and Productivity of European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis; Minister of Finance of Brazil Dario Durigan; Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom Rachel Reeves; Treasurer of Australia Jim Chalmers; and Minister of Finance of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Mohammed Al-Jadaan. They exchanged views on macroeconomic developments, key agenda of the G20 Finance Track, and other issues including bilateral cooperation. Liao was present at the meetings.
