On April 10, 2025, the United States government announced a further increase in “reciprocal tariffs” on Chinese exports to the United States, raising the rate to 125 percent. The United States has arbitrarily imposed excessively high tariffs on China, in serious violation of the international trade rules. Such actions disregard the global economic order the United States itself helped build after World War II, contradict fundamental economic principles and common sense, and represent outright unilateral bullying and coercion. China strongly condemns these actions.

In accordance with relevant laws and regulations of China, including the Tariffs Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People’s Republic of China, and the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China, as well as fundamental principles of international law, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council, with the approval of the State Council, announces that the additional tariff rate stipulated in the Announcement on Adjusting Tariffs on Imports Originating from the United States (Announcement No. 5 of 2025) will be adjusted from 84 percent to 125 percent, effective from April 12, 2025. All other related matters will be implemented according to the Announcement on Imposing Tariffs on Imports Originating from the United States (Announcement No. 4 of 2025).

Even if the United States continues to raise tariffs, such action would serve no economic purpose and would ultimately be remembered as a farce in the history of global economics. At the current tariff level, U.S. exports to China are no longer viable in the Chinese market. If the United States continues to play a numbers game with tariffs, China will not engage. However, if the United States insists on substantially harming China’s interests, China will take resolute countermeasures and see it through to the end.
