On April 8, 2025, the United States government announced that the “reciprocal tariffs” on Chinese exports to the United States would be raised from 34 percent to 84 percent. The U.S. move to escalate tariffs on Chinese goods is a further erroneous action that severely infringes upon China’s legitimate rights and interests, undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system, and disrupts the stability of the global economic order. It is a clear typical example of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying.
In accordance with relevant laws and regulations of China, including the Tariffs Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People’s Republic of China, and the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China, as well as fundamental principles of international law, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council, with the approval of the State Council, announces that the additional tariff rate stipulated in the Announcement on Imposing Tariffs on Imports Originating from the United States (Announcement No. 4 of 2025) will be adjusted from 34 percent to 84 percent, effective from 12:01 p.m. on April 10, 2025. All other related matters will be implemented according to Announcement No. 4 of 2025.
China urges the United States to immediately correct its erroneous actions, lift its unilateral tariff measures against China, and engage in dialogue to resolve differences on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
